Rashad Evans and Bill Gates Continued

I guess the mystery connection between UFC fighter Rashad Evans and Bill Gates gets even deeper. Microsoft is running a new set of ads for its “I”m a PC” campaign, and guess who appears?

Why, it’s Rashad Evans. So perhaps Rashad was already part of the commercial before he even decided to wear his Bill Gates T-shirt.

Oh well, either way it’s interesting to know they all have a sense of humor.

Here’s the video, with Rashad appearing at the very end.

My-O MyoMed!

Oh my! I was watching TV this weekend when I stumbled upon a commercial for some mystery product called MyoMed. I only know the name of the product because they repeat the word “MyoMed” about 50 times in the commercial. But I have no idea what it’s supposed to be.

The commercial is great for many reasons, but in particular note the woman shown below in the picture, appearing around :24 of the video.

She’s supposed to be making faces at a baby. But the big problem, is that the lady is obviously not carrying a baby at all!

She’s just making some very weird faces.

Unfortunately, the entire point of the commercial (I think) is that this MyoMed let’s you hold up a baby up to your face and make crazy, whackadoo faces at it.

But this woman just looks like she’s terrible at making faces. Ugh, I’m having nightmares!

World’s Greatest Roller Coaster

As a native New Yorker now living in California, I miss my hometown. But when I heard that Coney Island’s Astroland park was closing, I was heartbroken. I used to live near Coney Island for much of my youth and spent many Summer days going to the rides, playing the carnival games and riding The Cyclone rollercoaster.

Seeing as how I miss Coney Island, I thought I would share this video I found of the actual Cyclone rollercoaster ride so you can experience it virtually. Enjoy! It’s the most fun 1 minute and 50 second ride ever!

43% of Californians Speak Language Other Than English at Home

According to Census figures, about 43 percent of Californians speak a language other than English at home. That’s more than any other state. I think that means that California is a very racially interwoven state, more so than New York, which I previously thought was more of a melting pot when I lived there.

Nevertheless, many of these people who speak languages other than English at home feel that they are not very proficient at English. By contrast, fewer than 20 percent of U.S. residents overall speak another language at home, and fewer than 9 percent classify themselves as limited English speakers, the Census Bureau said.

This news may spark outrage for some that believe that all Americans should speak English and want to make it the official language of the country. For example, from the SF Gate story:

“It’s very disturbing when 1 in 5 people is not communicating in the common language,” said Victor Davis Hanson, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution. “Culturally, it creates a sort of tribalism. This country doesn’t have a predominant race or religion; it just has values. That’s a very thin bond. We have shared values and a shared Constitution; we also have to have a shared culture and language.”

When immigrants congregate in enclaves, they have a harder time learning English and becoming fully American, said Hanson, author of the book “Mexifornia: A State of Becoming.”

“It’s time to go back to the melting pot, control the borders and let assimilation, integration and intermarriage work,” he said.

Aside from fear mongering, there are people who see this news as a blessing since the results clearly show that people may also speak English at home. And assimilation into U.S. culture is happening as settled immigrants are speaking more English while still speaking their native language at home.

Overall, it appears that while many people in California speak other languages, they are also speaking English more and more.

Rashad Evans Wears Bill Gates T-Shirt

Is this another Microsoft advertising campaign?  During a recent pay per view, UFC fighter Rashad Evans wore a T-shirt with a picture of Bill Gate’s mug shot after a fight recently.  I’d like to present evidence A below:

The pictures are of Gates’ arrest in New Mexico when he was in college. Another blog also noticed this and thought it was good. Normally, fighters wear T-shirt from sponsors, but Evans’ shirt seemed a bit subtle.

Unless it was part of Microsoft’s new ad campaign. Or perhaps Evans just bought a T-shirt with Bill Gate’s picture on it? I thought I would investigate.

I found a web site that interviewed Evans after the fight and where he clarified why he wore the T-shirt:

As for the T-shirt, Evans said it was also an inside joke with the team.

“That shirt, it’s [Gates'] mugshot,” Evans said. “He was arrested in Albuquerque, N.M. He started off Microsoft in the basement of the Bank One Building. That’s right next to the (Team Jackson) gym.

That’s the only association right now, but the team is hopeful Gates could become more involved with Team Jackson someday.

“Maybe one day he’ll be part of my crew,” Evans joked.

Well, perhaps one day. So the mystery is solved. It was just a lark and it looks like anyone can just download Bill’s mug shot and slap it on a T-shirt, since I didn’t find any stores that sold it.

But why shouldn’t Microsoft start sponsoring fighters? Wouldn’t it be great to see new Microsoft ads on their shorts next to ads from Tap Out, Jesus Didn’t Tap and Condom Depot? (Yes, these are just some of the actual advertisers that pay to put their logos on the backsides of shorts.)
