Tivo Lowering Price on Series 3 DVR
March 13th, 2007 No Comments
Everyone knows that Tivo's Series 3 HD DVR is expensive. It costs $800 on Tivo's web site.
Now, Tivo's CEO even admits that the price is high. Engadget and others are reporting that Tivo's CEO, Tom Rogers, said that they will lower the price later this year.
During a conference call to Wall Street analyst, he said: "We will be highly focused this year on launching a lower-priced, mass appeal High Definition product." He admitted that the high price has cut into Tivo subscriptions.
Most likely people have chosen to go with HD DVRs from their cable or satellite providers. That's what I did when I got my HDTV. After spending big bucks for an HD set, I didn't want to spend another $800 for an HD DVR. Comcast offered one for about $10 more per month, so I chose that one.
The price issue is definitely a factor as people are clamoring for a lower priced HD DVR. TVPredictions.com conducted an unscientific poll that found that 46% of people said they would buy the TiVo HD DVR if it was priced at $399. Almost 50% said they still wouldn't purchase one, however.
Not only is the price high, but Tivo's Series 3 DVR doesn't have much storage space. It only holds 32 hours of HD content, or about 300 hours of standard content. I have an 180-hour Tivo right now and I can't imagine how I could handle going down to 32 hours. Hard drives are cheap
So come on Tivo. Lower your price, raise your storage. then I will definitely switch to Series 3.
